Chapter Fourteen
The following morning I devoted to perfecting the art of the perfect ginger cake. I think Iâd cracked it. It had not one, not two, but three types of ginger in it as well as freshly ground black pepper. It was the ultimate of ginger cakes, soft, moist and slightly sticky with a phenomenal hit of ginger, which was gorgeous, if you liked ginger that is. (In case youâre wondering thereâs fresh ginger, preserved ginger in syrup and ginger powder in it.) There were two cakes cooling on the rack by 8.30 and Malteaser was raring to get outside.
It was really getting cold now, and I blessed Janet for his lovely coat. The park looked glorious, with a pale blue sky and a winter sun touching the tops of the trees. I decided to walk around the pond, keeping Malteaser on the lead, and then go home, pack the cakes up which would be cool by now and deliver them for a tasting session to Jon at the café. Heâd asked for a seasonal regular cake and as winter was upon us, I thought the ginger cake would be a winner.
Back home the kitchen smelt gorgeous with the soft aromatic smell of baking lingering in the air. I packed up two dozen cherry scones for a café the other side of the park, and two lemon polenta cakes as well as the ginger cake for the tasting session.
I found myself taking more than my usual care in getting dressed to go out, as well as spending more time than normal in the bathroom in front of the mirror, putting my make-up on. I really missed the make-up girls at the studio! They surely would banish the dark circles under my eyes with a flick of a brush. I did my best with some Touche Eclat and tried hard to remember what they had told me about contouring, eyeliner, lip gloss and the whole battery of goo that was on the bathroom shelves and loaded into a very tatty make up bag that Iâd owned for years. Iâm sure that make-up, like milk and cheese have a sell by date and one day, one day Iâd have a lipstick cull and generally spruce up a bit. I smiled at my own vows, as I knew that that day would never arrive. I was doomed to be one of those women who had at least four semi dried up mascara wands, and five MAC lipsticks all in the same shade as I could never find them and was addicted to buying one whenever I was in an airport.
I brushed my hair and realised that I had relied on the make-up department for so long to trim or blow dry my hair that I didnât have a regular hairdresser any more. Iâd have to ask around. There was a small salon at the top of the road that didnât look too bad. It had bare brick walls and a changing art collection, and the stylists were at least over thirty, perhaps I should pop in and make an appointment.
